Getting Justice - Debate Maina Kiai

Getting Justice: Kenya's Deadly Game of Wait and See

The film will be followed by a debate chaired by journalist Linda Polman, author of De Crisiskaravaan. She will be talking to Kenyan human rights activist Maina Kiai, Rachel Irura of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, Africa expert Stephen Ellis, and Henk-Jan van Schothorst of the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy.

The main question is why a large part of the Kenyan population takes such a positive stance on the International Criminal Court (ICC), in sharp contrast to the attitudes of many surrounding African countries, including Uganda and Sudan. Does this willingness to submit to international law represent an actual improvement in cooperation between the ICC and the Kenyan authorities? And what steps need to be taken now to reduce tensions in Kenya?

Maina Kiai

Filmmaker and lawyer Maina Kiai is a leading figure in human rights efforts in Kenya and chaired the Kenyan National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), an independent organisation that promotes and protects human rights in Kenya. Maina's film Getting Justice documents judicial options that were available following the violence that surrounded the 2007 elections in Kenya.
