A Time for Drunken Horses

Bahman Ghobadi

In Iranian Kurdistan, close to the border with Iraq, five orphan brothers and sisters live a self-sufficient life. One of them is seriously ill. The required drug treatment is expensive, and the doctor wishes to have him operated as soon as possible to prolong his life by a few months. No matter how much work the oldest brother takes on, the family doesn’t have enough money to pay for surgery. The oldest sister accepts to marry an Iraqi man, who is willing to pay for the operation in Iraq. As they reach the border, however, the future husband’s family refuses to take the boy with them, offering a horse in return. The only way left for the oldest brother to make money is by joining the smugglers at the Iraqi border, across paths strewn with landmines...
'A Time for Drunken Horses' is a raw an realistic film that was Iranian Kurd director Bahman Ghobadi’s breakthrough. The film adapted from the childhood memories of Ghobadi, once himself a smuggler in Iran, won three prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, including the international film press’ award and the Golden Camera for best debut.
Bahman Ghobadi, who will attend the 2010 Movies that Matter Festival as a guest of honour, also directed the opening film 'No One Knows About Persian Cats'. 'A Time for Drunken Horses' is part of the festival’s retrospective dedicated to Ghobadi’s work.
